International Work to End Hunger
Helping Kids Around the World
Share Our Strength was founded in response to an international crisis – the 1984 famine in Ethiopia. And though most of our work takes place in the United States, work on hunger globally has always been a part of our mission. We work with local partners and funders to help end childhood hunger in other parts of the world.
By sharing ideas, best practices and resources – including everything we’ve learned from our No Kid Hungry campaign – we’re strengthening the movement to help children and end hunger around the world.
Today, our largest project is in India, where we work with Akshaya Patra, the largest school meals provider in the world. They serve a hot, nutritious mid-day meal to two million children every day – but they are reaching only a fraction of the kids who need them. We’ve set a goal of helping them feed an additional one million children over the next three to five years.
Our goal – in India and elsewhere – is not only to share our own strategies, but to learn from local leaders what works best. We know that lasting progress is only possible when the work is led by members of the community.
“What a wonderful visit we had bearing witness to hundreds of school children in India who receive a healthy midday meal from our partner Annamrita. These happy and healthy faces say it all!”– Debbie Shore, Co-founder of

“We are part of a global society, and ultimately the global goals will be our goals. I have always been so proud of Share Our Strength for being willing to work on the fringes”– Joni Doolin, Board Member
